A repülő kalmárok (Todarodes pacificus) visszafelé repülnek, a fejük hátrafelé áll, amikor kiugranak a vízből. Egy hatvanéves nyugalmazott tanárnak, Graham Ekinsnek sikerült őket lencsevégre kapnia Japántól délre, a Csendes-óceánon. A különleges tintahalak megijedtek a hajótól, mert azt hitték egy nagy ragadozó, s ennek hatására ösztönösen ugrottak ki a vízből, hogy elkerüljék a vélt veszedelmet. Főleg éjszaka közlekednek így és hihetetlen de sokkal gyorsabban és energia takarékosabban haladnak így, mint úszva.
