Dozens of dinosaur egg fossils have been discovered by construction workers on a site in the middle of a busy city in China.

Reports said a total of 43 eggs were found in the centre of the city of Heyuan, in southern China’s Guangdong Province, while workers were digging into the earth for road repairs.

An archaeologist who runs the local dinosaur museum, Du Yuanli, said the eggs, 19 of which were intact, had been found grouped together in 14 separate fossils, with the largest egg measuring 13cm in diameter.

Du added that the eggs were found in the rock strata of red sandstone, an environment in which other dinosaur egg fossils have also previously been found.

Further examination of the fossils is required to determine the species of the dinosaur eggs, Du said.

He added he believes similar dinosaur egg fossils might be found elsewhere in the city and has called for local residents and construction workers to be cautious, and to also inform authorities if they make a discovery.

Heyuan is known as the country’s home of dinosaurs, as dinosaur bones, footprints, and eggs have all been found in the region before. However, this is reportedly the first time such a large amount of fossilised eggs have been found in downtown Heyuan at one time.

In 2004 the Heyuan Dinosaur Fossil Museum was recognised by the Guinness World Records for housing the world’s largest collection of dinosaur egg fossils – 10,008 to be exact.
